What the three numbers on a fertilizer bag actually mean, how much nitrogen your lawn needs per year, when to apply it by grass type, and how to avoid burning your lawn.

Fertilizer is where most people overspend and mistime. Understanding three ideas โ€” what the numbers mean, how much nitrogen per year, and when to apply it โ€” covers the great majority of what matters.

What the three numbers mean

Every fertilizer bag carries three numbers, such as 24-0-4. They are percentages by weight of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), always in that order.

A 50 lb bag of 24-0-4 is 24% nitrogen by weight, so it contains 12 lb of actual nitrogen (50 ร— 0.24). That distinction between "pounds of product" and "pounds of nitrogen" is the single most common source of over-application.

How much nitrogen per year

The standard unit is pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per year. A typical application is 0.5 to 1.0 lb N per 1,000 sq ft, repeated a few times per season.

Centipede grass is genuinely different โ€” it evolved on poor soils and excess nitrogen causes decline. If you have centipede, feeding it like fescue will hurt it.

Working out your rate

To apply 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft using a 24-0-4 product: divide 1 by 0.24, which gives about 4.2 lb of product per 1,000 sq ft. For a 5,000 sq ft lawn, that is roughly 21 lb of product. Do this arithmetic once per bag and write it on the bag with a marker.

Quick-release vs slow-release

Check the guaranteed analysis on the bag for wording like "slowly available nitrogen" or ingredients such as sulfur-coated urea, polymer-coated urea, or methylene urea.

For most homeowners, a product with at least half its nitrogen in slow-release form is the better default: fewer applications, less mowing spike, far less chance of striping or burning the lawn.

When to fertilize

Cool-season grasses (fescue, bluegrass, ryegrass)

Fall is by far the most important feeding window. The grass is actively building roots and storing carbohydrates while top growth slows, so autumn nitrogen goes into root mass and next spring's density rather than into fast, floppy leaf growth.

Heavy spring nitrogen is a common mistake. It forces lush top growth right before summer stress, at the expense of roots โ€” exactly backwards. Feed cool-season lawns hardest in fall.

Warm-season grasses (bermuda, zoysia, St. Augustine, centipede)

The pattern inverts. These grasses grow in summer heat and go dormant in cold, so feed them through the warm months.

Applying it without striping or burning

Uneven spreading shows up as dark green stripes or a checkerboard two weeks later, and it is almost impossible to fix except by waiting it out.

  1. Calibrate the spreader, or at minimum start at the setting printed on the bag for your specific spreader model.
  2. Apply half the intended amount walking northโ€“south, then the other half eastโ€“west. This cross-hatch pattern hides small errors in overlap.
  3. Keep a steady walking pace and shut the hopper when you stop or turn.
  4. Water it in after applying, unless the label says otherwise โ€” this moves nitrogen off the leaf and into the soil, which is the main defense against burn.
  5. Sweep granules off driveways and sidewalks back onto the lawn. Anything left on pavement washes into storm drains.

Never apply fertilizer to a heat-stressed, wilting, or dormant lawn, and follow the product label โ€” the label is the legally binding instruction and it overrides any general guidance here.

Do a soil test first

A soil test costs very little through most state extension services and tells you your pH plus actual phosphorus and potassium levels. Without one you are guessing on two of the three numbers. Many lawns need no phosphorus at all, and buying a balanced product like 10-10-10 for an established lawn often means paying for nutrients the soil already has in surplus.
